#TAGJam22 - Show Me Your Moves! - Begins in 24 Hours!

The Arbitrary Gamejam Comes Home 2: Electric Boogaloo TAG has just come off a short one-month hiatus, and its kicking off right here. This time its a 7 Day Jam running from: 20th June @ 00:00 GMT [19th June @ 17:00 PST] UNTIL 26th June @ 23:59 GMT [25th June @ 16:59 PST] This TAG is has a special bonus rule that we're announcing early: Bonus Rule: "Show Me Your Moves!" This TAG, I want to see what you're working on! Instead of building a whole new game for the jam, show off something that you're currently working on or have worked on recently. During the Jam, spend those 7 days creating a special #TAGJam22 build of your project that incorporates the themes. For example: If your game is a Platformer, you could build a short bonus level or powerup that incorporates the TAG themes. If your game is an RPG, you could add a short quest, skill, monster or item which incorporates the TAG themes. If your game is a Racer, y...

The Arbitrary Gamejam #9 - YOU Suggest the themes!

Hi guys, In an interesting twist, the current TAG host has decided to let you guys help him build a pool of words to draw the themes from. So go and post your theme suggestions for #TagJam9 here: http://www.reddit.com/r/TheArbitraryGamejam/comments/2130pa/the_arbitrary_gamejam_9_suggest_themes/ See you all soon! ~Tick

The Arbitrary Gamejam Subreddit - /r/TheArbitraryGamejam

Hey guys Just letting everyone know that TAG The Arbitrary Gamejam now has a dedicated subreddit, /r/TheArbitraryGamejam The next host, Daniel Bauman aka /u/dopplex , is considering using the subreddit in some way for submissions to #TAGJam9 . But we're also hoping that everyone will use the subreddit to share game development goodness, tools and tricks you might find useful for TAG and other gamejams.  The subreddit is brand new and rough around the edges, so head on over and feel free to share the game development love. If you are a previous host of The Arbitrary Gamejam and wish to become a moderator of this subreddit, let me know your reddit username either in the comments below or if perhaps you wish to be a little more discrete, by emailing me at TickTakashi@TheArbitraryGamejam.com For more information on #TAGJam9 , check out dopplex's site: http://www.dopplex.net/TAG9/ That's all for now, hope to see you all in April for #TAGJam9 ! ~Tick

Announcing the Winner of The Arbitrary Gamejam #7

All I can say is wow, this TAG is super close. I'll preface this by saying that all the games submitted were enjoyable, even the incomplete ones were fun to play, but I've got to choose a winner, so here we go. There were three games that really stood out, for a number of reasons. I'm going to give some of my thoughts and opinions on each game, then at the end i'll announce the winner. - - - Packer  Durga Prasad & Nithin Reddy The first game to be submitted to the jam makes it into the final three for several reasons. The first and foremost being that, without reading the description given by Mr. Prasad, I knew exactly what sort of personal moment the game was aiming to get across. If you haven't played it, go and play it now (without reading the description in Mr. Prasad) and see if you can identify it too. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwcgKCBJ8C8cb1lpaXQzaG52UE0/edit ... Done? I was totally serious about you going to play that gam...

#TAGJam7 - A Special Rule

Themes for #TAGJam7 will be announced in less than 24 hours,  @ 7th Feb 0000GMT.  EDIT: To Clarify, The Arbitrary Gamejam #7 is 2 Days (48 hours) of development time! Originally, we had considered making #TAGJam7 the first week-long TAG, in fact we'd even thought of asking entrants to dedicate their entries to a special someone for valentines day. But unfortunately, the timing is bad for most people, so we're going to stick with the regular weekend affair. That doesn't mean there isn't a twist though! Special Rule You Game Must Relate To or Be Inspired By A Personal Moment In Your Life In other words, we want your game to really mean something to you, even if its not obvious to the rest of us exactly how, we want your games to come from a special/powerful/meaningful place. Last TAG wasn't the biggest, everyone is back on their regular work schedules (including myself!) and universities are in session, but fingers crossed that a few folks c...

The Arbitrary Gamejam Website is Almost Complete!

So, I've been quite quiet lately, due to coursework and whatnot, but thankfully its the holidays now and i've had a little time to get back to doing personal projects. So, the first thing I decided to tackle was an official website for The Arbitrary Gamejam... As you might already know,  www.TheArbitraryGamejam.com   actually directs you to a page on this blog, this was only temporary. Eventually I want TAG to stand on its own. I've been working on the site for a couple days, so I thought i'd show it off a tiny bit. As you can see it's not finished (although, I am going for the minimalist look). The fonts are not final and the only button that is functional is the "Rules" button. Eventually the goal is to have all the important information on this one screen. The site has been built using Rails (and Bootstrap for style points), because I've been toying with the idea of using the site to accept all the game submissions. That way, I can create a ...

TAG5 - Hosted by Ratalaika Games

TAG5 is GO! With some of the best themes we've ever seen in my opinion! If you haven't joined up: [Visit Their Website to Check Out the Themes] When you're done, be sure to tweet with the   #TAGJam5 Hashtag to let us all know you're going for it! I'm seriously looking forward to seeing what people come up with for this jam, the themes are brilliant and from what I'v heard the host is some kind of magician. Eager. ~Tick

TAG4 - Hosted by Isaac James

So, Isaac James is hosting TAG4 in just a few hour s, so I wanted to make a post to help point people in his direction, since his website isn't best formatted for hosting this sort of event. Isaac has decided to make a couple of small changes from the normal shindig, so If you're not clued in: [Visit His Website to Check Out the Rules] When you're done, be sure to tweet with the   #TAGJam4 Hashtag to let us all know you're going for it! I don't want to steal any thunder, so I won't say too much more. I'll be posting some updates on the state of my projects and TickTakashi after TAG 4 is over. See ya ~Tick

[TAG] - Introducing Shark

Introducing our entry for  The Arbitrary Gamejam #02! EDIT: I've had many messages telling me that people are clicking on the image without  realizing  its an image... I suppose I could have picked a better screenshot... EDIT2: Changed image to something people won't click. Shark is a game I developed, in tandem with the design, art and writing talents of  Jack Duckels, Luke Schnabel, David Fitzsimmons and Dylan Betts. Inspired by a little bit of all three themes, our game is about giving out loans and staying alive! Controls: Just click (aside from name entry at the start!). [TAG] - Announcing the Host for TAG September 2013

Top Three Games There were 14 entrants for August 2013 TAG , ultimately creating 10 different games using a variety of tools, styles and theme combinations. Even though there wasn't a huge number of complete games it will still tough to narrow down my favorite game, and in the end I narrowed it down to 3 games. HairQuest - by Hunter Harris Clearly using all three themes from TAG, HairQuest is a text based RPG game about "Collecting hair to destroy the world". HairQuest has some flaws but is a work in progress and, taking that into account, it's pretty decent looking and enjoyable. [Visit the Creators G+ Page] [Download HairQuest] Hairball - by Udell Games Hairball is a game about a bacterium named Tim (it doesn't get much funkier than games about bacteria doe it?). Hairball felt like a complete experience despite the authors protest on the website. It opens with a lovely kid-friendly-seuss vibe and its a pretty solid game bar some control ...
